Creating Raving Fans Every Day Is Our Passion

Our mission to make every square foot of flooring as perfect as human hands can make it started in 1979. The Malkin’s story takes a few twists and turns, but it always brings us back to our basic philosophy of creating raving fans every day.

The Beginning

The current owner of Malkin’s Flooring, Marty Schallock, was always good with his hands, but he didn’t get his start in the flooring business. Initially, he was an auto mechanic—and still has that same love for cars today, as a proud owner of a 2002 Ford Thunderbird.

After working as a mechanic, Marty was looking for a change of direction when the opportunity arose to work for Jim Malkin and Les Dubrin as a carpet and flooring installer at Carpet Town. At that time, the company worked primarily for demanding commercial accounts and some residential, so Marty learned the trade from “the subfloor” up.

In 1979, partners Jim and Les headed in different directions. Marty stayed with Jim and Malkin’s Flooring became the official name of the business. Later this same year, the company opened its Appleton Avenue location in Menomonee Falls.

During the early 1980s, Marty started working in the sales department, assisting builders and architects with their critical carpet and flooring selections. After several years of work and a committed dedication to customer service, Jim offered Marty an ownership stake.

The Middle

While the company was working on some residential projects, it was not a primary focus. In 1993, the decision was made to provide the same level of high-quality services to even more homeowners. As a result, Malkin’s opened a small showroom, so homeowners could view the many carpet and flooring choices available. Commercial or residential, all customers were important to Malkin’s. Even before Marty was the owner, he read the book “Raving Fans” by Kenneth Blanchard and it stuck. He managed to get everyone on the team to read it and learn about great customer service. And so “Creating Raving Fans Every Day” was born.

In 2001, Marty purchased the company and decided to grow the residential side of the business substantially. The Appleton Avenue location was remodeled inside and out—providing homeowners an even bigger and more fashionable showcase to look at different floorings, colors, combinations, and make wise choices. Marty always says we’re in the fashion business to this day!

This same year, the company partnered with Mohawks Floorscapes® and eventually earned a five-star level of excellence award from Mohawk.

In 2005, after experiencing significant growth, the company needed a more accessible location. Through a Chamber of Commerce event, Marty met Harvey Neu, store and River Court shopping center owner along Highway 41/45. As space was available in the facility, Marty jumped at the opportunity and opened a 16,500 square-foot facility that included an 11,000 square foot showroom in the new location. Marty recalls fondly that this was the best move they ever made!

The Future

In 2013, Malkin’s purchased even more space at its current Menomonee Falls location. This allowed the company to meet ever-growing homeowner demands and showcase more of its extensive hard surface products including hardwoods, luxury vinyl tile, ceramic tile, and more. In 2018, Malkin’s Flooring became part of the Nonn’s Flooring, Inc. family of brands.

Today we encourage everyone to visit our Idea Center—the endless possibilities will floor you! The Malkin’s advantage is that you can see and touch all the major brands of carpet, laminate, hardwood, custom area rugs, ceramic tile, and vinyl, all in one amazing place.
